Sorry, this is so late, but here are some of my favorite things from June. We’ve got one movie, one TV show, three songs, one album, and two books.

Movies

1.) Tomb Raider

I didn’t know what to expect going into this film since I’ve never seen the original films with Angelina Jolie and I haven’t played the video games it’s based on. I thought the trailers looked interesting, but never enough to make me go to the theaters and see it when it came out earlier this year. Then my brother bought the movie and I decided to watch it with him. This was a fun, action packed movie that I really enjoyed. I thought Alicia Vikander did a great job at portraying Lara Croft and she definitely stole the show, which she should since she’s playing Lara Croft. The rest of the cast was good, but their performances didn’t grab my attention as much as Vikander’s did. After the movie finished I found myself hoping they make a sequel because I’d love to watch another one.

TV Shows

1.) Cloak and Dagger

When I heard that Freeform was going to air a Marvel show I was very confused. Mainly because that didn’t seem like the type of show that Freeform would air or even want on their network. I also was concerned because I’ve watched a lot of Freeform or as it used to be known as ABC Family programming and was afraid it was gonna turn into every other teen drama on the network. I can say that this show completely surprised me. So far, Cloak and Dagger has told a compelling and entertaining story about two teenagers who end up with these powers that they have to learn to control both together and apart. The cast is amazing especially Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph who play the leads Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. If you haven’t checked out Cloak and Dagger yet, I highly recommend it. It’ll be easy to catch up on since I believe they’ve only aired 4 or 5 episodes at this point. Watch it, you won’t regret it.

Music

1.) Maren Morris “HERO”

I’m someone that usually avoids Country music because it’s just not the style of music I enjoy. There are a couple artist that I like, but as a whole it’s just not the genre of music for me. Now, that that’s out of the way let me explain why I gave Maren Morris‘ album a listen to. When I listened to Niall Horan‘s album one of my favorite tracks was a song called “Seeing Blind” and I loved the female voice on that track. So finally this month I decided to give Maren’s album a listen to since I loved her voice on that Niall track. This album was amazing. It’s a perfect mix of Country and Pop. Her sound and production kind of reminded me of Taylor Swift‘s album “Speak Now”. Maren’s voice is amazing and her songs range from catchy, dance songs to touching, heartfelt ballads. Some of my favorite tracks were “Sugar”, “Rich”, “My Church”, “80s Mercedes”, “Just Another Thing”, and “Second Wind”. This is a really strong album that I highly recommend, whether you listen to Country or not.

2.) Troye Sivan “My My My!” and “Bloom”

So, I apparently was living under a rock because I was unaware that Troye Sivan had released new music. Once I was made aware of this fact I quickly listened to and watched the music videos for Troye’s new songs. So first of all, “My My My!” and “Bloom” are such amazing songs. They both have that great mix of a song you’d dance to in the club, but the lyrics are so personal and relatable. Both of these songs also sound different to the songs on Troye’s last album Blue Neighbourhood and that makes me even more excited because while I liked his last album I wasn’t in love with it. The sound of the songs weren’t gripping to me, but these new songs immediately got my attention. Then there’s the music videos for them. If you haven’t seen them, then I highly recommend you do because they are stunning.

3.) Jesse McCartney “Better With You”

I have loved Jesse McCartney since I was a teenager and to give you context, I’m currently 26 years old. One of my friends let me know that Jesse had released a new song and I gave it a listen, and instantly loved it. I’ve enjoyed Jesse’s music in the past, but I haven’t loved it like his old stuff and that’s one of the things I love the most about his new song, it sounds like his old sound. I’m not against artist changing up their sound and maturing, I actually encourage it, but sometimes it doesn’t hit that well. That’s been one of my issues with Jesse’s music in the past, it just didn’t hit me like his old stuff did. So, the fact that Jesse was able to combine the old with the new with this song makes me so happy. Also the music video for this song, which co-stars Danielle Campbell from The Originals, is such an interesting video. The visuals and storytelling are done so well, plus the chemistry between Jesse and Danielle is perfect.
Check it out if you haven’t: “Better With You”.

Books

1.) Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

I’ve already written up my review, which you can find here. I gave Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling 3.5outof5Stars.

2.) Prodigy by Marie Lu

So, this was a reread for me and it took me forever to finish. It wasn’t until I finished the book that I realized that the reason it took me so long was because I found myself not really caring about Day’s chapters and really only wanting to read about June. Also, the insta-love that is Day and June’s relationship still bugged me in this one. Now, Marie Lu still did an excellent job with the action, spy work, and political drama, but the romance just wasn’t working 100% of the time for me even though I do love Day and June’s relationship, it just sometimes feels forced.
I, also, don’t understand why Champion even needs to be a thing because I felt like I was reading the conclusion of the series, but then the last two or three chapters threw some interesting things at me that made me think, “Okay, I guess there does need to be a third book”, but that still doesn’t take away from the fact that I don’t think there needed to be a third book.
I know it sounds like I didn’t enjoy this book, but I did. I just had some problems with it and I still stand by my original rating for it.

I gave Prodigy by Marie Lu 4outof5Stars.
